Business Analysis
Business Analysis is a focus for many organisations. As the bridge between the business and the stakeholders and the solution developers business analysts play a key role in ensuring what is needed by the business is what is actually delivered by the solution providers.
The International Institute of Business Analysis (IIBA BABoK v1.6 p 8) defines the function of business analysis as
Business Analysis is the set of tasks, knowledge, and techniques required to identify business needs and determine solutions to business problems. Solutions often include a systems development component, but may also consist of process improvement or organisational change.
Traditionally business analysts have grown out of being subject matter experts working within a business unit. Those who had an aptitude or desire to document user requirements for developers were thrust into the role of business analyst. Today business analysis has developed into a specialised role. The importance of core business analysis skills such as critical analysis and group facilitation are recognized as those that define a good business analyst and should be assessed and developed. For many organisations the business changes at a rapid rate and staff tenure is being shorter and so relying on subject matter experts within the business to “just know” what is needed is not longer a viable option. Business analysts must be able to achieve the desired outcomes without being experts in each product or user environment they must analyse. In essence Business Analysts must be knowledgeable about but not experts in each product or process.
Project Performance Group has developed a Business Analyst Assessment tool designed to assess the current knowledge and skills of your business analysts. The PPG process results in a gap analysis and suggested development program that can be applied at the individual and group level.
The knowledge assessment is based on the IIBA Body of Knowledge BABoK v1.6 and can be tailored to align with your internal methodology and language.
